Nigeria's Buhari feels 'ready to go home' after treatment in UK

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has said he feels ready to return home after medical treatment in the UK, and is awaiting his doctor's permission.

Mr Buhari has recently faced questions at home over whether he is well enough to run the country.

Since the start of 2017 he has spent more time in the UK than in Nigeria.

His current period of sick leave is the second this year, after a stint from January to March. The nature of his illness has not been disclosed.

"I feel I could go home, but the doctors are in charge," Mr Buhari said in a statement. "I've now learnt to obey orders, rather than be obeyed."

He added that there had been a "tremendous improvement" in his health.

Some protesters in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, have demanded the president's resignation this week. Others called for more transparency about his condition.

When Mr Buhari first went to London for treatment in June 2016, his office said it was for a persistent ear infection.

His main opponents in Nigeria's 2015 election had claimed he had prostate cancer - which he denied.

Photos released by the presidency show the 74-year-old standing outdoors in sunglasses and smiling as he holds a "Get well soon" card.

Mr Buhari has appointed his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, to carry out his duties in his absence.

The leader's medical challenges have sparked speculation in Nigeria about whether he will be fit to seek a second term in 2019.

The health of Nigeria's leaders has been a sensitive topic since 2010, when President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua died in office after months of treatment overseas.

Raila mulls next move on disputed election

By AFP for Citizen Digital

Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga was weighing his next move Monday to contest an election he claims was rigged after defying pressure at home and from abroad to take his complaints to the courts.

The 72-year-old insists he was the rightful winner of a “stolen” election last week and has urged his supporters to stay away from work Monday to mourn the deaths of those killed in angry protests against the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta. However, after nearly a week in limbo in which businesses remained shut and workers stayed home, Nairobi largely came back to life on Monday with many unable to afford any more time away from their livelihoods.

Fruit vendor Alex Kilonzo returned to his stand on a busy street corner, even though many nearby had not reopened. “If I had money I could strike,” he told AFP.

“Life has to move on,” said IT worker Kenneth Kiruja as he headed into the office for the first time since Tuesday’s election, adding the opposition should take their grievances to court.

Odinga, a veteran opposition leader in Kenya, lost his fourth shot at the presidency, according to official results, and has repeated claims he made in 2007 and 2013 that the vote was rigged against him..

His loss sparked angry protests on Friday night and Saturday in his strongholds in the west of the country and in Nairobi slums, leaving 16 people dead according to an AFP tally. This includes a nine-year-old girl hit by a stray bullet.

Police have denied that innocent protesters have been killed, saying those shot dead had been armed and attacked officers, many while carrying out criminal acts such as rape and looting.

Ethnic grievances

The dispute has plunged Kenya into its worst political crisis since Odinga lost a 2007 election that many observers agreed was riddled with irregularities.

That election exposed decades-old political and ethnic grievances over access to power and land that sparked two months of violence in which 1,100 were killed and 600,000 displaced.

Three of Kenya’s four presidents have been Kikuyu and the other Kalenjin, leaving Luos and other major ethnic groups feeling excluded from power and marginalised for over half a century.

While there have been efforts to dilute the winner-takes-all nature of Kenyan politics, notably by devolving power to the counties, critics argue the underlying fault lines have merely been papered over.

As a grim reminder of this, members of Odinga’s Luo ethnic group and those from Kenyatta’s Kikuyu group clashed violently in Nairobi’s Mathare slum late Sunday with sticks, rocks, bows and arrows.

Mobs set on a Luo man, and then later in revenge a Kikuyu man, leaving them bloodied and motionless, as captured by two AFP photographers.

Nairobi police chief Japheth Koome denied the incident.

“We don’t have attacks in Mathare,” he told journalists.
‘No turning back’

Despite this isolated incident, protests in Odinga’s strongholds appeared to largely have fizzled out, as his supporters await his next move.

“We are not done yet. We will not give up. Wait for the next course of action which I will announce the day after tomorrow (Tuesday),” Odinga told a crowd of thousands in Nairobi’s Kibera slum on Sunday.

Later on Twitter he wrote: “There is no turning back”.

The United Nations, Britain, France and the European Union have beseeched Odinga to use legal means to address his concerns. Kofi Annan, who mediated the 2007/08 crisis, has warned Kenya’s political leaders to “be careful with their rhetoric and actions.”

Odinga and his National Super Alliance (NASA) claim the results from Tuesday’s election which came in via an electronic tallying system were hacked and manipulated.

Documents he has provided as evidence so far have been dismissed by the electoral commission, and it is unclear what Odinga will do next.

He lost a court dispute in 2013 when he alleged an election was rigged, and this time NASA has said court is not an option.

Odinga has until Friday to lodge a court complaint.

MESSAGE FROM MS IRINA BOKOVA, DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNESCO, ON THE OCCASION OF THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY, 12 AUGUST 2017

Youth Building Peace

The world has never been so young and it is getting younger every day. The development of any society depends on how well it nurtures its young women and men, how well they are supported.

In 2015, there were 1.2 billion young people in the world, and more than 600 million lived in fragile and conflict-affected contexts. Young people carry the heaviest burdens of conflict and violence -- they are also essential for any lasting solution leading to peace.

We have examples from across the world. NoushaKabawat teaches conflict resolution skills in refugee camps. Monday Collins is a former child soldier and an inspiring young peacemaker. Nadiehezka Palencia is a young human-rights lawyer working on the Colombian peace process. Each of them is a member of our #YouthofUNESCO community. Each is living proof that young people are already shaping the world for the better -- we need to recognise this and support them.

This is the spirit of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 on youth, peace and security, to engage and partner with young women and men, and their organizations, in promoting peace and preventing violent extremism. Youth stand at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and UNESCO is working across the board to support them not as beneficiaries but as leaders, playing vital roles at local, national and global levels. This starts with work to create environments to empower young women and men as change-makers in their communities, to strengthen the foundations of dialogue and peace, especially in conflict or violence-affected areas.

On International Youth Day, let us all unite – international actors, governments, civil society and educational institutions -- to partner with young women and men to craft new paths together towards more peaceful societies.

President Kenyatta floors Odinga to win second term

Uhuru Kenyatta has been declared the winner of the Tuesday (August 8) presidential election.

Uhuru was announced the winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after garnering 8,203, 290 votes, a 54.27% representation of all the votes cast, against his closest challenger, Raila Odinga, who received 6,762,224 votes, a 44.74% representation of the votes cast.Uhuru was contesting for a second term on a Jubilee Party ticket while Raila was running on an opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) ticket.

In an announcement by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Kenyatta clinched a (55.5%) of the vote.

Uhuru, who is the sitting President of the Republic of Kenya, was declared winner together with his running mate William Ruto despite contests by the opposition that the election had been rigged.

Independent candidate Joseph Nyaga came third with 42,259 (0.28%) Votes and was followed by Alliance for Real Change’s Mohamed Abduba Dida and Thirdway Alliance’s Ekuru Aukot with 38,093 (0.25%) and 27,311 votes (0.18%) votes respectively.
